How I work

I approach each new person that comes to work with me with curiosity as to how I will be able to help, and what it is that you really need.

Our first session together is a chance to explore what has brought you to counselling or therapy, and what you hope to get from it.  It is also a chance for you to decide whether you would like to work with me, and for me to assess whether I have the skills and experience to offer you what you need.

From this session we will work out whether a short focused set of sessions would work for you, or whether you would prefer longer term, open ended therapy, and agree a way forward.  I will often suggest that people try six sessions anyway, before making any longer term commitment.

Therapy is a place to explore what is really going on for you, in a safe and attentive space.  It is time to really pay attention to yourself, and listen to what is going on for you, and be truly listened to.  My aim is to provide you with a warm, kind, supportive (and challenging) safe environment in which to undertake this exploration.

People who have observed me working have commented on my calm presence and my care, kindliness and warmth.  I pay attention to what you tell me through your body as much as your words, and I am interested in your felt experience, as often it is hard to put words to what you are feeling.

I enjoy using creative techniques to help us understand what is going on for you and between us, where this is something that works for you.  My aim is to work with you to find the approach that fits you best, and to develop this as we work together.
