Do you feel more alive, more connected, more grounded when outdoors? If you find that you can connect to your feelings more easily when out in the open air you might like consider taking your therapy session outside.
Conventionally, psychotherapy takes place indoors, in a designated room, and this room becomes a safe place, a crucible for change. I aim to make the room I work in with clients warm, comfortable and interesting, as I place considerable importance on the environment in which therapy takes place.
However, an indoor room isn't the only place therapy can happen. Being outside, connecting with the sounds of birds, seeing branches swaying in the wind, feeling a tree's deep rootedness, noticing different textures beneath our feet, in our hands, smelling the changing air as it starts to rain, all these connections can be releasing and healing.
Instead of four walls our natural environment becomes our container, and together we will develop a highly relational way of working as we negotiate the decisions that need to be made during each session (such as coping with changes in the weather, meeting people one of us know, finding that the path is steeper or muddier than we would like....)
Ilkley is surrounded by parkland, river walks, moorland, woods and fields. There is plenty of evidence that being in nature is good for our mental health: whether in terms of mood, optimism, relaxation, alleviating depression and anxiety. And there is also a deeper connection that nature allows and needs with us, a reciprocal relationship of healing.
We will be exploring relationships: your relationship with yourself and your various internal parts, your relationship with me as your therapist, and running through all of this, your relationship with nature and how you experience nature around you.

How this works in practice
We start with an online introductory session, to assess our suitability for each other and whether working outdoors is likely to work for you. We will discuss the practicalities of working outside and your preferred environment. We will agree when we will use zoom instead (eg forecast heavy rain, thunder, high winds, flooding) and how we will maintain an adequately confidential space.
Charges, contracting and terms are the same as for working indoors.
